Remove the Stakes Early

Staking a tree is essential to ensure that it does not break while still young. However, the stakes should be removed as soon as the tree can stand on its own. For most types of trees, that usually takes about a year. Allowing the tree to sway in the wind will make it develop a much stronger trunk. To stake a tree, always use a loose and flexible tie to support the stem. Avoid nylon ropes, wires, or anything else that might cut into the tree.

Remove the Grass and Nearby Plants 

Well-maintained grass growing around your trees may at times be aesthetically pleasing. However, you should always remove the grass which grows around or up the trunk of your trees. That is because the grass will compete with the tree for water, air, and nutrients. That is especially the case for young trees if you want the trees to grow fast and be healthy. Maintaining a mulched area around the tree trunk is a good idea.

Ensure the Trees Have Enough Water

If your tree is still young, you need to water it frequently. Mature trees can survive without much water when growing in the right regions but still need to be watered during drought. When watering, use enough water and ensure the water penetrates deeply into the soil. Lawn sprinklers will probably not get the job done because they do not wet the soil deep enough. Also, ensure the soil has partially dried before you water the tree again.

Use Fertilizer When Needed

The use of fertilizer applies specifically to young trees. You should add the right type of fertilizer to the soil as and when required. You should only use fertilizer if you notice your trees have yellowing foliage or are growing poorly. A much better way of determining if and when to fertilize is by doing a soil test. The soil test will indicate the level of each nutrient, helping you choose the right fertilizer for your trees.
